UTK English Roundtable on Careers in Journalism
Dr. Erin Elizabeth Smith sat down with University of Tennessee English alumni Claire Dodson, Daniel Dassow, and Christopher Moyer for a roundtable discussion on how their English degrees helped them in their future careers in journalism.
This online discussion took place on Thursday, April 4th from 5:00-5:30 PM EST on Zoom. Please see the video below.
P. Claire Dodson is the senior culture editor at Teen Vogue. Hailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, she previously was an editor at Fast Company and has written for The New York Times, The Atlantic, Esquire, InStyle, Village Voice, and more. She loves to explore an artist’s coming-of-age story and shifting public persona, as well as how fandoms grow and evolve over time. Her poetry has been published in The Mantle, Public Pool, The Stories, and One Trick Pony Review.
Daniel Dassow writes about tech and energy for the Knoxville News Sentinel, where he speaks with executives of start-ups, members of Congress and some of the world’s leading scientists. He graduated from UT in 2023 with degrees in English (literature, creative writing, and rhetoric and writing) and Religious Studies. He began writing at The Daily Beacon as a freshman and worked at the paper for four years, ending as editor-in-chief. When he’s not working, he tries his best to read (and maybe write) fiction and spend time with his wife and cats.
Christopher Moyer is a writer, designer, and digital strategist in Tennessee. His non-fiction and fiction have been featured in Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vice, and elsewhere. He serves as the Vice President of Marketing for Western CPE, and he owns Hard Luck Creative, a boutique marketing, copywriting, and graphic design firm.
