Publications

UT English supports an array of publishing ventures. Our new Publishing concentration in the English major represents a long-standing history of majors who go into publishing  as well as many publishing ventures supported by scholars and students in our department. It includes guaranteed publishing internships for all majors and a special relationship with UT Press, their open access imprint Newfound Press, and the PubLab in the UT Libraries.

The English Department currently publishes the following periodicals and series:

Phoenix Literary and Arts Magazine

Since 1959, Phoenix Literary and Arts Magazine has been the premiere venue for undergraduate creative writing and visual arts, notably publishing the first fiction of American novelist, Cormac McCarthy. In recent years, published twice annually

Grist: A Journal of the Literary Arts

Founded in 2007, Grist is edited and managed entirely by graduate students in the English Department. Published once annually.

Tennessee Studies in Literature

This series of scholarly monographs has been edited and published in collaboration with the University of Tennessee. Published periodically since 1973?

Vol of Duty

Newfound Press

The mission of the Newfound Press publishing lab, a part of the University of Tennessee Press, is to foster a dynamic, collaborative environment through which students can engage with the art, business, and science of publishing. The lab will provide hands-on experience, empowering students to explore and develop innovative approaches to content creation, design, production, and distribution. We are committed to cultivating a culture of academic rigor and interdisciplinary partnerships, aiming to produce high-quality works that reflect the voices of our community and contribute meaningfully to the global conversation. We are dedicated to creating an environment that encourages creative experimentation, sustainability, and professional growth, while preparing the next generation of leaders in the publishing industry.

Our vision is to cultivate a dynamic student-run publishing laboratory that empowers emerging scholars, writers, and creators to push the boundaries of academic and creative expression. Through collaborative innovation and hands-on experience, we aim to foster a community where ideas are transformed into impactful, accessible, and thought-provoking works, shaping the future of knowledge dissemination and creative publishing.
