Research Interests: 19th C. American Literature, Conversion Narratives, History of Biblical Interpretation, Secularism and Unbelief
Joseph Gaines is a first-year PhD candidate in English focusing on religion in 19th century literature. He has researched the variety and centrality of despair in autobiographical conversion narratives from Black Atlantic literature of the 18th and 19th centuries. He has also studied the role of biblical criticism in antebellum American prose and James Joyce’s novels.
