PhD in Creative Writing

December 1 — Applications deadline

The PhD in English with a Creative Dissertation is a program for students who have already earned an MFA and wish to pursue further professional training that emphasizes both creative writing and English studies.

Through collaborative workshops, PhD candidates continue the advancement of their artistic practice, explore new work, and refine existing projects.

Additional coursework in English studies allows for the development of secondary areas of expertise.

Under the guidance and mentorship of Creative Writing faculty, PhD candidates will complete a dissertation consisting of a book-length creative manuscript with additional critical apparatus.

The PhD program is fully funded. Throughout, candidates can expect to receive extensive hands-on experience within the English Department as tutors, instructors, and research assistants. PhD candidates will also have the chance to pursue editorial opportunities, including leadership positions at the graduate student-run Grist: A Journal of the Literary Arts.

Each year, our Creative Writing Reading Series brings in a full slate of acclaimed poets and writers to share their work with students and community. Additionally, PhDs can participate themselves in the student-run Chiasmus reading series.

Placement support and fellowship opportunities are available, including at UT’s Denbo Center for Humanities and the Arts.
