New Scholarships Available for English 491/591: Summer Theater Festivals in Ireland and England

The English Department is proud to announce additional scholarships for our Summer 2026 English 491/591 courses. The class takes place July 13th to August 3rd. Applications are due Wednesday, February 25th, 2026 at 5 p.m.

Dr. James E. Gill English Drama Travel Fund Scholarships

  • Three awards of $1,500

Hodges Better English Fund Scholarships

  • Two awards: $3,000 and $2,000

Criteria for Candidates: Full-time enrollment as a student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville either as an undergraduate or graduate student, with at least a 3.0 GPA in their major. Students who apply for a scholarship should demonstrate interest not just in traveling but also in experiencing and studying theater-in-performance.

Please submit the following materials to Prof. Robert E. Stillman (rstillma@utk.edu) as an electronic file formatted in Word by 5:00pm Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026.

  1. A letter of application. Your letter of application should explain a) your academic background, including current major(s), minor(s), and/or concentrations; b) career aspirations; c) the specific reason(s) you are interested in participating in the course; and d) a statement of financial need. Letters should run to no more than three typed, single-spaced pages.
  2. A copy of a recent course paper. You should submit a recent sample of your academic writing. Essays should not exceed ten pages in length (graduate students) or five pages (undergraduate students) and can be about any literary topic, though papers about some aspect of drama would be preferable.
  3. A current academic transcript
