Interdisciplinary Programs

The Department of English collaborates with many other departments within the College of Arts and Sciences to offer Interdisciplinary Programs. These include Africana Studies, Cinema Studies, Global Studies, Linguistics, Museum Studies, and Women and Gender Studies.

Africana Studies

Africana Studies is committed to producing and disseminating interdisciplinary knowledge about Africa, African Americans, and the African Diaspora around the world, promoting creative and critical thinking skills through rigorous research, teaching, service, and publication.

Cinema Studies

Cinema Studies encompasses film, television, and related narrative arts. Students in the program produce their own films, videos, and animations, and study the cultural, historic, and aesthetic dimensions of motion pictures and television.

Global Studies

Global Studies is an interdisciplinary program focused on global interconnections and integration, as well as inequalities and disruptions, at multiple scales around the world including at home in Tennessee.

Linguistics

Graduates of our program are well prepared to pursue advanced study in linguistics. Graduates of our program have entered a variety of language-related and applied professional fields (translation, audiology, speech pathology, and language teaching), as well as linguistics itself as an academic discipline.

The WGS program is an inclusive and updated program for the 21st century. We are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment that welcomes all members of our academic community.  Our courses are fused with a wide variety of disciplines from across the College of Arts & Sciences, and they adopt an exciting range of approaches that can appeal to an expansive range of student interests.
