Research Interests: Poetry and poetics, Postcolonial Literature, African Diasporic Literature, Memory and Trauma Studies, Black Masculinities, Traditional and Experimental Forms, Queer Theory, Embodiment, and Black Queer Diaspora.

Ernest Ohia is a queer Nigerian poet, painter, ceramist, and editor whose work explores queerness, migration, memory, masculinity, faith, family, grief, and the body, with particular attention to the emotional and psychological lives of Black queer people across Nigeria and its diaspora. They are currently working on a full-length poetry manuscript and are a first-year PhD student in English at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. They earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama, where they served as Design Editor and Assistant Poetry Editor for Black Warrior Review, and have interned with Copper Canyon Press. Their writing has been supported by the Tin House Summer Workshop, the Vermont Studio Center, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and the Soaring Gardens Artists Residency. Their debut chapbook, The Wanting Flesh, is forthcoming from fifthwheel press in 2027. When They’re not writing or painting, They’re usually reading, scrolling on Instagram, or delivering long, principled lectures to their cat, Maxxxine, who, sadly, remains financially irresponsible.
