Literary Knox

Literary Knox seeks to bring Knoxville’s literary history to life both virtually and concretely, providing maps, biography, and contextual information to connect visitors with these important cultural figures.

Walking Tour: Literary legends James Agee, Alex Haley, Cormac McCarthy, and Nikki Giovanni all lived in Knoxville at some time and each produced works referencing the city. Those references, or the haunts and habits of the authors themselves, are the basis for a 15-site walking tour.

Cultural Tour: Between 1930 and 1990, Cormac McCarthy, Annemarie Schwarzenbach, and Buddy and the Huddle immersed themselves in the Scruffy City. They all produced work that is thematically linked and culturally similar, despite their diverse backgrounds and mediums.

Knoxville Writers, Past and Present: Knoxville has been rich in writers since its beginning. Some lived here in the past, some are actively living and writing in our community today. Visit our catalog of writers who span the decades, and work in diverse genres, from song writing to fiction, play writing to poetry.
