Scholarships Available for English 491/591: Summer Theater Festivals in Ireland, England, and Scotland

Thanks to our recent success with a VOLstarter crowdfunding campaign, two awards of $1000.00 each will be made for students planning to enroll in the course.

Criteria for Candidates:

Full-time enrollment as a student at UTK either as an undergraduate or graduate student.

1) Academic Achievement

Applicants should have at least a 3.0 grade point average in their major.

2) Interest in Drama, Enthusiasm for the Program

Students who apply for this grant should have a demonstrable interest not just in traveling, but also in experiencing and studying some of the best drama in the world.

3) Financial Need

Applicants for these grants should be persons for whom participation in a course of this type would be normally too difficult to manage without financial assistance.

Application Materials and Process.

Please submit as a PDF or electronic file by Jan. 20, 2020

1) A Letter of Application

The letter of application should offer: a) General information about the student: Where is the student from? What is s/he studying? What are his/her career aspirations?); b) The specific reason(s) for the student’s interest in participating in the course; and c) Why, specifically, the student would not be able to participate in the course without the financial assistance provided by the grant? Letters should run to no more than three typed, single-spaced pages.

2) A Copy of the Student’s Most Recent Academic History

3) A Copy of a Recent Paper

The applicant should submit a recent sample of his or her critical work. Essays should not exceed four pages in length, and can be about any literary topic, though papers about some aspect of drama would be preferable.


Applications are due on January 20. Awards will be made on or about January 27th.
