Poets Cornelius Eady and Joy Harjo will appear alongside Stacey Abrams and Oprah Winfrey at this year’s Poets & Writers In Celebration of Writers virtual gala, to be held March 25, 2021. Cornelius Eady, a nationally renowned, award-winning poet, will join the Creative Writing faculty of the University of Tennessee Department of English in fall 2021, serving as the John C. Hodges Chair of Excellence. Joy Harjo, the previous Hodges Chair of Excellence at UT, is currently in her second term as United States Poet Laureate. The Poets & Writers gala will open with a poem from Harjo. Eady will perform as musical guest, with his band, the Cornelius Eady Trio.
Poets & Writers, founded in 1970, is the largest nonprofit organization for creative writers in the US. At this year’s benefit gala, politician and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Oprah Winfrey will be featured in conversation with acclaimed authors. Winfrey notes, “I am so honored to help celebrate Poets & Writers, an organization that helps creative writers from inspiration to publication.”
