UT Graduate Behind Memorable Super Bowl Ads

A 2007 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, Johnny Dantonio credits his experience as an English major with a concentration in Creative Writing for jumpstarting his career in the advertising industry. As creative director at Anomaly an agency in New York, Dantonio wrote the heartwarming Budweiser Super Bowl ad “Puppy Love.” The ad earned one of the most coveted advertising honors, the top spot in USA Today’s consumer-judged Ad Meter for Super Bowl commercials. .”

Dantonio continued his streak when his “Lost Puppy” follow up commercial also took the top spot in USA Today’s consumer-judged Ad Meter for Super Bowl commercials in 2015.

“Puppy Love” and “Lost Puppy” continue to be two of the most highly ranked Super Bowl commercials of all time.  They ranked #1 and #4 respectively in YouTube’s 2017 list of the Top Super Bowl Ads Since 2008.  A 2016 study by TiVo named “Puppy Love” their Top Ten List of the best Super Bowl commercials in the 50 year history of the game, with “Lost Puppy” coming in 2nd.    “Lost Puppy” had over 25 million views the first week it was posted.  WVLT did a feature on Dantonio in 2016.

Dantonio and his team at Anomaly do most of the international advertising for Budweiser. In addition to Budweiser, Anomaly handles most of the advertising for Converse, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Renaissance Hotels, Captain Morgan, as well as a number of projects with Google, P&G, and international beverage supplier Diageo.

Johnny Dantonio received the 2014 Alumni Promise Award; the Alumni Promise Award recognizes alumni no older than 40 who have demonstrated distinctive achievement in a career, civic involvement, or both. This award is presented to acknowledge alumni who are making a mark early on in their career.
