The Department of English will award fourteen undergraduate scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year, including the Charles and Frances Mangam Merit Scholarships. Two scholarships are reserved for minority students and another for a rising senior with a well-rounded course record. Awards are made after a committee review of a student’s overall GPA, GPA in English courses, personal statement, general program of study, and a letter of recommendation from a member of the instructional staff.
All declared English majors with an overall GPA of a least 3.0 are eligible for the scholarships. Applicants must have completed their two 200-level course prerequisite in the major by the end of Spring 2017, and award holders must be full-time students during Fall 2017 and Spring 2018. Students who received one of these awards in 2016-17 or earlier may reapply, but no preference will be given to prior award holders. The Mangam Merit Scholarships will pay a total of $4,000, in two installments. The department’s other scholarships pay a stipend between $1,000 and $4,000.
To apply for an English Department scholarship, students must complete all steps of the application by Friday, April 7, 2017. Winners will be notified via email by mid-July.
