Mentoring UTK English

English Major Mentoring

Professorial faculty in the English Department serve as mentors for our majors. When you declare a concentration or have completed your 2-200 major pre-requisites, you will be assigned to a faculty member whose interests align with yours. Mentors guide students with English course recommendations, research, and study abroad experiences; provide context to connect English coursework to the world and their future; and develop plans for graduate school, professional programs, and career paths. Academic advising for course, major, and graduation requirements are handled separately by our English departmental advisor, Kirsten Pitcock.

Students are responsible for contacting their mentor to schedule an appointment.

We also have an informal program that connects you to alumni from our program. They represent the full range of what people do with English majors. They are doctors, writers, lawyers, teachers, communications specialists, entrepreneurs, non-profit leaders, social media managers, business people, and so much more. If you have questions, please contact the Professor Gerard Cohen-Vrignaud, gerard@utk.edu, or Dennis McGlothin, dmcgloth@utk.edu.
