UT Authorfest and the Phoenix Literary Arts Magazine Announce Chekhov Inspired Writing Contest

Chekhov Writing Contest
This fall, UT AuthorFest and the Clarence Brown Theatre are celebrating the life and work of Anton Chekhov, the transformative early-modern Russian playwright and master of the modern short story.

As part of the festival, UT AuthorFest and the Phoenix Literary Arts Magazine announce a Chekhov-inspired writing contest, open to all current undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Tennessee. Entries are welcome in both drama and the short story.

To qualify, submissions must in some way be inspired by Chekhov or his work. Examples might include contemporary re-imaginings or alternate re-tellings of one of Chekhov’s existing stories or plays. Or submissions might be entirely new works inspired by Chekhov’s life, his characters, or his distinctive style.

The deadline for submissions is September 22, 2017.

Individual cash prizes of up to $150 will be awarded at the discretion of the judges. Winning submissions (and honorary mentions) will be published online in the Phoenix Literary Arts Magazine and may appear in the fall print edition.

Email submissions to Professor Stephen Blackwell (sblackwe@utk.edu).

For questions about the contest, contact Professors Christopher Hebert (chebert3@utk.edu) or Stephen Blackwell (sblackwe@utk.edu).
