Creative Writing

In Creative Writing, students hone their skills as writers and grow as artists through rigorous application of craft, under the tutelage of our distinguished Creative Writing faculty and visiting writers.

Each year, our Creative Writing Reading Series brings in a full slate of acclaimed poets and writers. In addition, the student-run Chiasmus reading series gives our creative writing community at all levels an opportunity to share new work.

Outside of coursework, undergraduate students can take part in the Creative Writing Club and gain valuable editorial experience working on Phoenix Literary Arts Magazine.

Graduate students in creative writing have the opportunity to learn editorial and arts-management skills working at our award-winning graduate student-run journal, Grist: A Journal of the Literary Arts. The Young Writers Institute offers graduate students the chance to teach and mentor local high school students in an annual day-long workshop.

The English department has an outstanding record for job placement for PhDs, and our MFAs and undergrads have gone on to publish well, build successful careers, and pursue further study at top universities in the country. We think that speaks highly, not only of the program and of the people here, this community of writers, but also of the place itself.
