Advising is central to the English major experience. The department has a dedicated professional advisor, Ms. Kirsten Pitcock. She meets individually with students when they enter the University and she continues to advise them throughout their careers. She helps students develop their holistic academic plans through graduation; explains policies and procedures; provides information about degree requirements, academic standards, and milestones; and connects them to campus resources that promote academic success and facilitate career exploration.
Students are responsible for scheduling appointments with Ms. Pitcock when they have required advising and/or when they have advising related questions. Advising is required each term until a student has earned 45 credit hours and in terms in which they are off-track or on academic probation. After a student has earned 45 credit hours and is not off-track or on probation, then advising is required every other term based on your student ID number. Students whose ID numbers ends with an even digit are required to be advised in fall term for spring registration. Students whose ID numbers ends with an odd digit are required to be advised in spring term for fall registration. You can do this by using Navigate, which can be found on your myUTK. You will select “College of Arts and Sciences” as the office you are scheduling the appointment with and then select “English Advising” as your major. Before each advising session, make sure to prepare by reviewing the following: (1) a DARS report through MyUTK; (2) a list of the courses you are considering taking the following semester; and (3) and any questions you may have.
Students who have faculty advisors should contact them to make an advising appointment.
